Unleash Your Potential at 851 Music Studio
“Although it’s very common to find guitar instructors who are very good guitar players, it is rare to find one who is not only a great musician, but a great instructor as well. At 851 Music Studio, J. Shelby fills that bill. He is a gifted teacher who knows how to plan a student’s music education and development, He has found ways to keep the lessons and supporting practice fresh and challenging, and continually finds unique ways to motivate his students.” – Nils K.
Give your children the musical advantage. According to 851 Music Studio owner, musician, and innovative teacher James (J.) Shelby, researchers are providing us with an unprecedented understanding of how we think and how we learn. Now we know that music is a vital part of a complete education. “There is a direct correlation between improved SAT scores and the length of time spent studying the arts. Studies have linked active music-making with better language and math ability, improved school grades, better adjusted social behavior, and improvements in spatial-temporal reasoning.”
851 Music Studio offers a brilliant and talented staff of devoted full time teachers who’ve spent their lives honing and refining their craft. All of their teachers are degreed and/or working professionals. The traditions of music taught are endowed with personal knowledge and many years of experience. They use the most innovative teaching methods in a beautiful environment for learning. It’s a unique, spacious facility featuring iMac computers and an array of pop musical instruments. They meet or surpass the State of California’s educational standards.
J. began his musical career when he was given a guitar at the age of five, and, with a little help from his dad, taught himself how to read music and how to play. He hasn’t stopped strumming since. Music has been his life, and his passion is to pass his knowledge along to anyone interested in learning. Whether you are five years old or 83, the possibilities are endless.
J. is the studio director at 851 Music Studio, has been teaching for 35 years, and has worked with thousands of students. His experience as a teacher and player inspires students to participate in diverse traditions of American popular, classical, and world musics. His private and group lessons creatively explore songs, riffs, rhythm parts, bass lines, and melodies, as they relate to a broad range of popular musical styles including Jazz, Blues, Rock, Funk, Fusion, Country, Folk and Classical. Students are encouraged to perform, compose, improvise, and to make use of the latest in music learning technologies.
At 851 Music Studio, you not only learn to play an instrument: you learn how to perform, how to interact with an audience, how to put words to melody, making your song’s journey more alluring and beguiling, and how to experience the pure joy of music.
