Island Aardvark’s…Where It’s Cool to Drool!
“Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day.” – John Grogan (Author of the international bestseller “Marley & Me.”)
For a dog, every morning is Christmas morning; every walk is the best walk; every meal is the best meal; and every game is the best game. For the humans in the family, life isn’t always so simple. We work, or go out for the evening, and we leave our dog(s) home alone. Because dogs are social animals, they crave companionship, attention, and lots of love, exercise, and play. If you’re like most busy families today, you may not be able to give your pet all that s/he needs.
Island Aardvark’s Dog Training Center & Doggie Day Care provides a fun-filled, safe haven for your best friend. This wonderful facility on Mare Island offers daycare and cage-free boarding 24/7 (even on holidays) in a loving, attentive, relaxed atmosphere, to ensure that your canine has the best experience
Doggie Daycare is highly beneficial for a variety of reasons. Shy or timid dogs are able to interact with as many or as few dogs as they choose, and will never be forced to play in a group in which they are uncomfortable. Daycare sessions work beautifully for dogs who show any signs of separation anxiety. Each day is filled with fun and safe distractions that will keep them stress-free and out of trouble while being away from home and you. Lastly, Doggie Daycare tires out your pup in the most positive ways. “A tired dog is a good dog!”
The facility encompasses thousands of square feet of space specifically designed for dogs. The dogs can roam freely around the fenced-in outdoor spaces at the facility, and romp to their hearts’ content, never alone.
Canine play groups are supervised by employees certified in canine CPR and first aid, and taught to read canine body language to ensure safety. During the course of the day, employees work with their charges on socialization and basic manners. According to owner Janet Hantke, the dogs “are here to play, but they must behave.”
Co-owner Janet Hantke explains that Aardvark’s is operated just like a childrens’ daycare. The dogs have play time, naps, snacks, and meals together. On warm days, kiddy pools are set out in the yard, and bubbles are blown into the air. Aardvark’s even hosts doggie birthday parties where all of the canines are included in the festivities, and go home with goodie bags filled with healthy treats. The party pup also gets a framed photo of his/her special day.
Not all dogs are appropriate for Aardvark’s day care setting, and all dogs are closely vetted before they can enter the program. Owners complete a pet personality profile, and the dog must pass an evaluation day. This is where they are introduced to other dogs with the same play style and temperament. The dogs must be up-to-date on all their vaccinations, and if they are over seven months old, they need to be spayed or neutered. As Janet explains, “it’s about having fun and being safe.”
Janet and Glenda work long hours and treat their canine charges as if they were their own. Dogs who are lucky enough to spend time at Aardvark’s are thrilled about the possibilities. “Nobody has to drag their pets here,” Janet says. “They bark for joy even before the car stops at the front door.”
