Volunteer for a Cause: Brighten the Lives of Seniors by Delivering Meals Throughout Solano County
Sometimes we forget about our seniors. Meals on Wheels of Solano County has not. They have been delivering nutritious meals to home-bound seniors in Benicia, Dixon, Fairfield, Rio Vista, Suisun, Vacaville and Vallejo since 1977.
Ann Stevens has been volunteering to deliver some of those meals since she retired 17 years ago, and she loves every minute of her time with her clients. She may be the only person they see during the day, and the hugs and smiles she receives make it all worth while. Ann explains that while people are living longer, families are not as close as they once were, leaving older people with no support.
Meals on Wheels helps to fill that gap by delivering meals to those who need assistance, along with a little TLC.
To be eligible for Meals on Wheels home delivery, you must be 60 years of age or older, a resident of Solano County, and homebound. To participate in meals at senior dining sites, you must be 60 years old and a resident of Solano County. For more program information, call the Meals on Wheels office at (707) 425-0638.
No senior is ever denied a meal based on their ability to contribute. Meals on Wheels asks those who CAN give, DO so, that they can continue to serve those who CAN’T.

Vallejo Piecemakers – Artists Who Quilt for a Cause
Ann has been a member of Vallejo Piecemakers for over 20 years, and loves giving to others. The group’s current project involves quilting placemats for each and every homebound senior Meals on Wheels serves in Solano County, nearly 650 people daily. The quilters are inspired, and the goal is to brighten tables and bring good cheer. They have already created about 200, and plan to distribute them toward the beginning of next year. Vallejo Piecemakers also makes quilts for a variety of other charitable organizations, including the Florence Douglas Senior Center, the Christian Help Center, the Veterans’ Home in Yountville, Breast Cancer Auctions, the Vallejo/-Benicia Relay for Life, and the Baby Blanket Relay. If you’re interested in becoming part of this extraordinary organization, go to membership. VallejoPiecemakers.org for further information.
Meals on Wheels is always looking for volunteers. The volunteer commitment can be as little as an hour-and-a-half once a week, or as many hours as you choose. Christy, Volunteer Services Coordinator, does her best to work around volunteers’ schedules so that it’s easy and convenient for all involved. If you’re interested in helping those in need, call Christy at 754-2662 (M-F 10am-2pm), or email her at email@example.com.
