Humane Society of the North Bay

Wendy Jones

Our Mission is to provide shelter and compassionate care to our community’s animals in need, offer programs that improve their lives, and strengthen the lifelong commitment between animals and people.”

The Humane Society of the North Bay (HSNB) is a small, private, nonprofit (501c3) corporation established in 1986 to offer refuge, medical care, nourishment, and an opportunity for a second chance at life to homeless animals. They strive to protect animals from cruelty, neglect, carelessness, and ignorance.

HSNB is a “no-kill” shelter. Animals are kept on the property until they are adopted, with the help of dedicated staff and volunteers. All animals coming to HSNB receive all vaccinations, and are mic-rochipped, and spayed/-neutered. A veterinarian visits the site twice a week to check on the well-being of the animals.

Most of HSNB’s funding comes from individuals and businesses in the form of generous donations of money, supplies, and services, as well as from sales at their Happy Tails Thrift Store (located at 1825 Springs Road in Vallejo).

They also sponsor three major annual events: Clear the Shelters Day, Raise the Woof, and Mardi Paws Gala & Auction (formerly Barkitecture). August 17th marked the third annual Clear the Shelters Day at HSNB, featuring $20 adoptions, pet food, supplies, and information booths, and food provided by Earl’s BBQ. The gala was a huge success. Eight big dogs, six small dogs, and 26 cats (a total of 40) found forever homes that day.
Coming up on Sunday, September 22nd, is Raise the Woof, a standup comedy show HSNB is hosting for the first time, that includes appetizers, a cash bar, silent auction, and lots of laughs.

HSNB’s big annual fundraiser, Mardi Paws Gala & Auction, will be held at the Masonic Temple in Vallejo on Saturday, April 25, 2020. Mark your calendars!

Many local businesses contribute to HSNB including Myer Corporation, which will match donations up to $15,000; the Vallejo Yacht Club, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, Kaiser Permanente, and Pet Food Express.
My Mutt Poster at Pet Food Express offers to make your pet a celebrity. Donate $250 or more to HSNB, fill out their on-line form and email, fax, or upload a copy of your donation receipt. One of Pet Food Express’s professional pet photographers will call to arrange a photo shoot of your beautiful pet. You choose the image, and you’ll receive a large, high-quality poster on UV-protected Sintra board. It will be displayed at the store for six months, after which you can bring the poster home.

It”s a lot of work, but according to newly appointed Executive Director Wendy Jones, “The staff here love these animals, and when one of our furbabies gets adopted, we all cheer. It’s a huge celebration. They all grab our hearts. I enjoy matching these animals with people who will be their “furever” families. It’s very satisfying.”
